Packers and Movers Charges in Madurai — What a Move Actually Costs in 2026
A 2 BHK move inside Madurai costs between ₹7,000 and ₹13,500. The same 2 BHK to Chennai costs ₹21,000 to ₹33,000. Those are the numbers most people are looking for, so they are at the top of the page rather than buried under six paragraphs of introduction.
The harder question is why one family pays ₹8,200 for that Madurai move and their neighbour in the same block pays ₹14,000. Same city, same size flat, same week. The difference is never random. It comes down to eleven or twelve specific cost drivers, and almost no moving company explains them, because the confusion is where the margin hides.
This guide takes the bill apart. Every line item, what it should cost, what makes it go up, and which charges are legitimate versus which ones are added after your furniture is already on the truck and you have lost your bargaining position. It is written by Mahalaxmi Packers & Movers, operating out of Othakadai in Madurai since 2008, from the rate structures we quote and the ones we see customers bring to us from other companies.
Every figure below is an ex-GST estimate for a standard load with professional packing. Ranges are wide on purpose — a bare 2 BHK with a bed, a sofa and eight cartons is genuinely a different job from a 2 BHK with a five-door wardrobe, a double-door fridge, a treadmill and forty cartons. Nobody can quote you accurately from a room count alone, and any company that does is guessing or will revise the number later.
Quick Price Summary
If you only read one section, read this one.
| What you are moving | Within Madurai | Madurai to South TN (under 250 km) | Madurai to Chennai / Bangalore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Few items / bachelor load | ₹2,500 – ₹5,000 | ₹5,500 – ₹9,000 | ₹8,000 – ₹14,000 |
| 1 BHK | ₹4,000 – ₹8,000 | ₹8,000 – ₹16,000 | ₹14,000 – ₹23,000 |
| 2 BHK | ₹7,000 – ₹13,500 | ₹12,000 – ₹24,500 | ₹20,000 – ₹33,000 |
| 3 BHK | ₹11,000 – ₹19,000 | ₹18,000 – ₹34,000 | ₹29,000 – ₹46,000 |
| 4 BHK / villa | ₹18,000 – ₹32,000 | ₹28,000 – ₹52,000 | ₹45,000 – ₹72,000 |
| Bike only | ₹1,200 – ₹2,000 | ₹2,200 – ₹3,800 | ₹3,500 – ₹6,000 |
| Car only | ₹3,500 – ₹6,000 | ₹6,500 – ₹10,000 | ₹9,000 – ₹15,000 |
| Small office (up to 10 seats) | ₹12,000 – ₹25,000 | ₹22,000 – ₹42,000 | ₹35,000 – ₹65,000 |
Ex-GST. Full-service packing, dedicated vehicle, ground-floor to ground-floor or lift-accessible. Add 18% GST on full-service relocation.
- Volume, not room count. Movers price cubic feet. A minimal 3 BHK can cost less than a heavily furnished 2 BHK, and this happens more often than you would expect.
- Vehicle utilisation. A dedicated 17 ft truck costs the same whether it goes out half full or fully packed. Filling it is the single biggest lever on your rate per cubic foot.
- Access at both ends. Floor level, lift availability, and how far the truck can park from your door. This is where quotes and final bills diverge most often.
How a Moving Quotation Is Actually Built
A relocation quote is not a single price. It is five costs added together, and understanding the split is what lets you compare two quotations properly instead of just picking the smaller number.
| Component | Share of a typical local bill | Share of a typical intercity bill | What drives it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle & fuel | 20 – 30% | 45 – 60% | Distance, truck size, tolls, return-load availability |
| Manpower (packing, loading, unloading) | 30 – 40% | 15 – 25% | Crew size, hours, floors, carry distance |
| Packing material | 15 – 25% | 10 – 18% | Fragile count, furniture type, packing grade |
| Handling & specials | 5 – 15% | 5 – 12% | Dismantling, crating, piano/gym equipment, AC removal |
| Overhead, insurance, margin | 10 – 15% | 8 – 15% | Company structure, compliance, warranty on damage |
Approximate splits from typical Madurai job costing. Useful for sanity-checking any quote you receive.
Once you see this split, a suspiciously low quote stops being attractive and starts being informative. On a local 2 BHK, packing material alone is rarely under ₹2,500 if it is done properly. If someone quotes ₹5,500 all-in for a fully packed 2 BHK, the material line has been left out of the quote, not out of the job. It will appear on the day.
Local House Shifting Charges in Madurai
Local means within Madurai city limits and the immediate outskirts — Anna Nagar to KK Nagar, Tallakulam to SS Colony, Goripalayam to Othakadai, Iyer Bungalow to Thirunagar. Most of these are 6 to 18 km apart. Distance barely moves the price at this range; what moves it is how much you own and how hard it is to get it out of your building.
Local charges by home size and service level
| Home size | Transport only (you pack) | Standard packing (fragiles + furniture) | Full packing (everything wrapped) | Vehicle | Crew |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Few items / studio | ₹1,800 – ₹3,000 | ₹2,500 – ₹4,000 | ₹3,200 – ₹5,000 | Tata Ace | 2 |
| 1 BHK | ₹2,800 – ₹4,500 | ₹4,000 – ₹6,500 | ₹5,500 – ₹8,000 | Ace / 407 | 2 – 3 |
| 2 BHK | ₹4,500 – ₹7,000 | ₹7,000 – ₹10,500 | ₹9,000 – ₹13,500 | 407 / 14 ft | 3 – 4 |
| 3 BHK | ₹7,000 – ₹11,000 | ₹11,000 – ₹15,500 | ₹14,000 – ₹19,000 | 14 – 17 ft | 4 – 5 |
| 4 BHK | ₹11,000 – ₹17,000 | ₹17,000 – ₹25,000 | ₹22,000 – ₹30,000 | 17 – 19 ft | 5 – 6 |
| Villa / duplex | ₹14,000 – ₹22,000 | ₹21,000 – ₹28,000 | ₹25,000 – ₹32,000 | 19 – 22 ft | 6 – 8 |
Ex-GST, single trip, lift-accessible or ground floor at both ends. Add floor and long-carry charges where applicable.
What "transport only" really means
Transport-only is the cheapest line in that table and the one most often misunderstood. You pack every carton, you wrap every mirror, you bubble-wrap the TV. The crew loads, drives and unloads. If you have not finished packing when the truck arrives, the crew will either wait — billed by the hour — or pack for you at material plus labour rates that were never quoted.
It works well for students moving out of hostels near Madurai Kamaraj University, for bachelors in Anna Nagar with a bed and four cartons, and for anyone shifting within the same apartment complex. It works badly for families with children, because nobody finishes packing on time when there are children in the house.
Booking transport-only to save ₹3,000, then asking the crew to pack fragiles on the day. Emergency packing is charged at premium material rates plus overtime, and it is done fast rather than carefully. Two damaged items wipes out the saving. Decide the service level honestly before you book, not on moving morning.
Madurai-specific access charges
Certain parts of the city genuinely cost more to move out of, and any honest quotation should state this upfront rather than add it later.
| Situation | Where it commonly applies in Madurai | Typical addition |
|---|---|---|
| No lift, per floor above ground | Older buildings in Goripalayam, Tallakulam, Simmakkal, Villapuram | ₹350 – ₹600 per floor |
| Lift too small for furniture | Many older apartments in KK Nagar, Anna Nagar | ₹500 – ₹1,500 (staircase handling) |
| Truck cannot reach the door | Masi and Chithirai street area, old city lanes around the temple | ₹1,000 – ₹3,000 (shuttle vehicle) |
| Long carry over 30 metres | Gated layouts in Iyer Bungalow, Othakadai, Avaniyapuram | ₹500 – ₹1,500 |
| Restricted society timings | Newer apartment complexes citywide | ₹500 – ₹2,000 (split shift or waiting) |
| Temple festival road closure | Old city during Chithirai festival | Rescheduling, or shuttle as above |
If you live in the old city — the Masi streets, Avani Moola Street, or the lanes behind the Meenakshi Amman temple — tell the surveyor before they visit, and mention it on the phone. A 17 ft container cannot turn in those lanes. The correct answer is a small shuttle vehicle running to a larger truck parked on a main road, priced in advance. The wrong answer is a company that says "no problem sir" and then discovers the problem on moving day with your furniture half-loaded.
Intercity Charges from Madurai
Intercity pricing works differently. Manpower becomes a smaller part of the bill and the vehicle becomes the dominant cost, which means the single most important question is one that most customers never think to ask.
Dedicated vehicle or shared load?
| Dedicated vehicle | Shared / part load | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | The whole truck carries only your goods, direct to destination | Your goods share space with other consignments |
| Cost | Baseline (all prices on this page) | 25 – 40% less |
| Transit time, Madurai to Chennai | 1 – 2 days | 4 – 8 days |
| Transit time, Madurai to Hyderabad | 3 – 4 days | 7 – 12 days |
| Handling | Loaded once, unloaded once | Handled 2 – 4 times at transit hubs |
| Damage exposure | Low | Higher — more handling, mixed loads |
| Delivery date | Committed | Window, not a date |
| Best suited to | Families, transfers with joining dates, fragile-heavy homes | Students, bachelors, sturdy goods, flexible timelines |
Shared load is a legitimate and useful option, not a downgrade — but only if you can genuinely wait. A government officer with a joining date in Chennai on the 1st cannot risk a delivery window of "sometime in the first week." An IT employee moving to Bangalore with two weeks of company accommodation can, and should, because the saving is real.
Distance bands from Madurai
| Band | Distance | Destinations | Typical 2 BHK, dedicated | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Under 150 km | Trichy, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar | ₹12,000 – ₹21,000 | Same or next day |
| B | 150 – 300 km | Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Thanjavur, Nagercoil, Tiruppur | ₹14,500 – ₹24,500 | 1 – 2 days |
| C | 300 – 500 km | Chennai, Bangalore, Hosur, Kochi, Vellore | ₹20,000 – ₹34,000 | 2 – 3 days |
| D | 500 – 1,000 km | Hyderabad, Mangalore, Vijayawada, Goa | ₹31,000 – ₹48,000 | 3 – 4 days |
| E | Over 1,000 km | Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad | ₹42,000 – ₹85,000 | 4 – 8 days |
Ex-GST, dedicated vehicle, full packing. Deduct 25 – 40% for shared load.
A truck going Madurai to Chennai has a good chance of finding a paying load for the return trip. A truck going Madurai to a smaller town may come back empty, and that empty return is built into your quote. This is why Madurai to Chennai at 460 km can cost less per kilometre than Madurai to a town half that distance off the main corridor. It is not overcharging. It is how road freight economics work, and a company that explains it is telling you the truth.
Route-wise Charges from Madurai

Ex-GST. Distances are approximate road distances and vary by route taken.
Route notes worth knowing
Madurai → Chennai. Our highest-volume route, and the one with the most competition, which keeps rates keen. Chennai delivery adds complications that Madurai does not have: many buildings restrict moving hours, several central areas have parking constraints, and OMR and Porur addresses can add a half day. Confirm your Chennai building's rules before you fix a delivery date — a truck waiting outside a society gate is billed as detention.
Madurai → Bangalore. Heavy demand from IT employees and students, and it peaks sharply in June and July. Book two to three weeks ahead for those months if you want a dedicated vehicle at a normal rate. Many Bangalore apartments enforce strict move-in windows and charge their own security deposits, which is not part of your mover's bill but should be part of your budget.
Madurai → Coimbatore. Short enough that a well-planned move loads in the morning and unloads the same evening. If you can be flexible on the date, this is one of the easiest routes to get a discount on, because trucks run it constantly and a returning empty vehicle is worth filling cheaply.
Madurai → Trichy, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi. Same-day delivery is realistic on all three for loads up to a 2 BHK. Insist on it in writing rather than accepting an overnight halt, because an overnight halt means your goods sit in a parked truck somewhere, which is exactly when losses happen.
Madurai → Hyderabad. The longest route in the table and the one where shared load makes the most financial sense, but also the one where shared load takes the longest. Interstate movement means a valid e-way bill for the consignment and proper documentation at check posts. A mover who cannot explain their e-way bill process on an interstate route is a mover to avoid.
Madurai → Hosur and Salem. Both sit on the NH-44 corridor and both are common destinations for factory and manufacturing transfers. Hosur in particular sees regular movement from Madurai for automotive-sector jobs, and those moves often include a bike or car alongside household goods, which is cheaper booked together than separately.
Vehicle Transport Charges from Madurai
Bike transport charges
Two-wheeler rates are priced by engine capacity, because a 500cc bike takes more space and more careful handling than a scooter.
| Destination | Scooter / up to 125cc | 126 – 200cc | 201 – 350cc | Above 350cc |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Within Madurai | ₹1,200 – ₹1,600 | ₹1,400 – ₹1,800 | ₹1,600 – ₹2,100 | ₹1,900 – ₹2,600 |
| Trichy / Tirunelveli / Thoothukudi | ₹2,200 – ₹3,000 | ₹2,500 – ₹3,400 | ₹2,900 – ₹3,900 | ₹3,400 – ₹4,600 |
| Coimbatore / Salem / Erode | ₹2,600 – ₹3,500 | ₹2,900 – ₹3,900 | ₹3,300 – ₹4,400 | ₹3,900 – ₹5,300 |
| Chennai / Bangalore / Hosur | ₹3,500 – ₹4,800 | ₹3,900 – ₹5,300 | ₹4,400 – ₹6,000 | ₹5,200 – ₹7,200 |
| Hyderabad | ₹4,800 – ₹6,500 | ₹5,300 – ₹7,100 | ₹6,000 – ₹8,000 | ₹7,000 – ₹9,500 |
| Mumbai / Pune | ₹6,000 – ₹8,500 | ₹6,600 – ₹9,200 | ₹7,400 – ₹10,200 | ₹8,600 – ₹12,000 |
Ex-GST, doorstep pickup and delivery, includes standard protective packing. Add transit insurance separately.
- Fuel must be drained to near-empty. This is a safety requirement, not a preference — a full tank in a closed carrier is a genuine fire risk.
- Photograph the bike from all four sides plus the odometer, in front of the crew, and get a copy attached to the consignment note.
- Remove or list every accessory: crash guards, tail bags, mobile mounts, aftermarket exhausts. Anything unlisted is anything undisputed later.
- Keep the RC and insurance copies with you, not in the toolbox.
Car transport charges
| Destination | Hatchback open carrier | Sedan open carrier | SUV open carrier | Enclosed carrier (premium / luxury) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Within Madurai | ₹3,500 – ₹4,500 | ₹4,000 – ₹5,200 | ₹4,800 – ₹6,000 | ₹7,000 – ₹10,000 |
| Trichy / Tirunelveli | ₹6,500 – ₹8,000 | ₹7,000 – ₹8,800 | ₹8,000 – ₹10,000 | ₹12,000 – ₹16,000 |
| Coimbatore / Salem | ₹7,000 – ₹8,800 | ₹7,600 – ₹9,500 | ₹8,800 – ₹11,000 | ₹13,000 – ₹17,500 |
| Chennai / Bangalore | ₹9,000 – ₹12,000 | ₹10,000 – ₹13,000 | ₹11,500 – ₹15,000 | ₹16,000 – ₹22,000 |
| Hyderabad | ₹12,000 – ₹15,500 | ₹13,000 – ₹17,000 | ₹15,000 – ₹19,500 | ₹21,000 – ₹28,000 |
| Mumbai / Pune / Delhi | ₹16,000 – ₹24,000 | ₹17,500 – ₹26,000 | ₹20,000 – ₹30,000 | ₹28,000 – ₹42,000 |
Ex-GST. Open multi-car carrier is the standard option. Enclosed single-vehicle carriers cost substantially more and are worth it only for high-value cars.
Booking household goods and a vehicle together on the same route with the same company almost always beats booking them separately, typically by 8 to 15% on the vehicle leg. The company is already running the corridor and already has your documentation. Ask for a combined quote explicitly — it is rarely offered unprompted.
Office and Commercial Relocation Charges
Office moves are priced on a different logic from homes. The dominant cost is not distance but downtime, and the work usually happens on a weekend or overnight so that Monday morning is normal.
| Office size | Within Madurai | Madurai to Chennai / Bangalore | Typical crew & duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 seats | ₹12,000 – ₹25,000 | ₹35,000 – ₹65,000 | 4 – 6 staff, 1 day |
| 10 – 25 seats | ₹25,000 – ₹48,000 | ₹60,000 – ₹1,10,000 | 6 – 10 staff, 1 – 2 days |
| 25 – 50 seats | ₹45,000 – ₹85,000 | ₹1,00,000 – ₹1,90,000 | 10 – 16 staff, 2 – 3 days |
| 50 – 100 seats | ₹80,000 – ₹1,60,000 | ₹1,80,000 – ₹3,20,000 | 16 – 25 staff, 3 – 5 days |
| Retail shop / showroom | ₹18,000 – ₹60,000 | ₹45,000 – ₹1,20,000 | Depends on fixtures and stock |
Ex-GST. Server and network equipment handling, and after-hours work, are quoted as additions.
What sensible office quotes include that home quotes do not: workstation dismantling and reassembly, systematic labelling so that every carton and monitor returns to the right desk, separate anti-static handling for servers and network racks, a documented inventory for audit, and a GST invoice that lets the business claim input tax credit. That last point alone recovers 18% of the bill for a registered business, which changes the real cost of the move considerably.
What Goes Into the Bill — Every Line Item
Packing material charges
Material is the line customers understand least and get overcharged on most. These are realistic Madurai market rates.
| Material | Unit | Typical rate | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-ply corrugated carton, large | Per box | ₹120 – ₹180 | Books, kitchen, general household |
| 5-ply carton, medium | Per box | ₹90 – ₹140 | Clothes, linen, light goods |
| Wardrobe carton with hanging rail | Per box | ₹350 – ₹500 | Sarees, suits, hanging garments |
| Bubble wrap roll (1 m × 100 m) | Per roll | ₹900 – ₹1,400 | Glass, crockery, electronics, mirrors |
| Corrugated sheet roll (4 ft × 50 m) | Per roll | ₹700 – ₹1,100 | Furniture edges, appliance bodies |
| Stretch / cling film roll | Per roll | ₹350 – ₹550 | Sofas, mattresses, drawer sealing |
| Foam / EPE sheet roll | Per roll | ₹500 – ₹800 | Polished surfaces, TV panels, bikes |
| Mattress cover, heavy duty | Per piece | ₹150 – ₹250 | Mattresses |
| Packing tape | Per roll | ₹40 – ₹70 | Sealing |
| Wooden crate, custom built | Per crate | ₹1,500 – ₹4,500 | Marble, artwork, glass tabletops, aquariums |
| Thermocol / corner protectors | Set | ₹200 – ₹450 | Appliance corners, TV edges |
| Home size | Realistic total material cost | Approx. carton count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 BHK | ₹1,500 – ₹2,800 | 12 – 22 |
| 2 BHK | ₹2,500 – ₹4,500 | 22 – 40 |
| 3 BHK | ₹4,000 – ₹7,000 | 38 – 60 |
| 4 BHK / villa | ₹6,500 – ₹12,000 | 55 – 95 |
These figures are why a fully packed 2 BHK cannot honestly be quoted at ₹5,500 all-inclusive.
Labour charges
| Role or task | Basis | Typical rate in Madurai |
|---|---|---|
| Trained packer | Per person per day | ₹700 – ₹1,000 |
| Loader / helper | Per person per day | ₹550 – ₹800 |
| Supervisor | Per day | ₹900 – ₹1,400 |
| Carpenter, furniture dismantle & reassemble | Per day | ₹1,000 – ₹1,600 |
| Modular wardrobe or bed dismantling | Per unit | ₹800 – ₹2,500 |
| Split AC uninstall | Per unit | ₹700 – ₹1,200 |
| Split AC reinstall | Per unit | ₹1,200 – ₹2,200 |
| Window AC removal / fitting | Per unit | ₹500 – ₹900 |
| Geyser, chimney, TV wall-mount removal | Per unit | ₹400 – ₹900 |
| Overtime beyond standard 8 hours | Per hour per person | ₹120 – ₹200 |
Loading and unloading charges
In a full-service quotation, loading and unloading are included. They are billed separately only when you book labour without transport — for instance, if you have already arranged a vehicle and just need a crew.
| Scope | Typical charge |
|---|---|
| Loading only, 1 BHK | ₹1,200 – ₹2,000 |
| Loading only, 2 BHK | ₹2,000 – ₹3,200 |
| Loading only, 3 BHK | ₹3,000 – ₹4,800 |
| Loading and unloading, both ends, 2 BHK | ₹3,500 – ₹5,500 |
| Heavy single item (piano, safe, treadmill, gym rack) | ₹1,500 – ₹5,000 |
Storage and warehousing charges
Storage is common when possession dates do not line up — the new flat is not ready, or a transfer date moves. Charges have two parts, and quotes that mention only the first will surprise you.
| Volume | Monthly storage | One-time handling in | One-time handling out |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 BHK worth of goods | ₹2,000 – ₹3,500 | ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 | ₹1,500 – ₹2,500 |
| 2 BHK | ₹3,500 – ₹6,000 | ₹2,500 – ₹4,000 | ₹2,500 – ₹4,000 |
| 3 BHK | ₹6,000 – ₹9,500 | ₹4,000 – ₹6,000 | ₹4,000 – ₹6,000 |
| Vehicle (car or bike) | ₹1,500 – ₹3,500 | Included | Included |
Most companies bill part-months as full months. Confirm this before agreeing to storage.
- Is my consignment stored separately, or mixed with other customers' goods in an open warehouse?
- Is the facility fire-insured, and does that cover my goods or only the building?
- Can I visit and inspect my goods, and with how much notice?
- Is the storage charge in addition to, or instead of, the second-leg delivery charge?
Transit insurance charges
Insurance is priced as a percentage of the value you declare, and the type of cover matters more than the percentage.
| Cover type | Premium | What it covers | What it does not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transit / basic | 1 – 1.5% of declared value | Total loss, fire, accident, overturning of the vehicle | Individual item breakage during normal handling |
| All-risk / comprehensive | 2 – 3% of declared value | The above, plus breakage, scratches and denting during handling | Pre-existing damage, undeclared items, electrical or mechanical failure |
| Owner-packed goods | Usually excluded or loaded | — | Most insurers will not cover breakage inside cartons you packed yourself |
Insurance premiums attract 18% GST. Declared value must be realistic — under-declaring reduces your payout proportionally.
On a ₹5,00,000 declared household value, all-risk cover runs ₹10,000 to ₹15,000. On a local Madurai move of a modest home, that is often more than the move itself, and basic transit cover is the sensible choice. On a Madurai to Hyderabad move with a full home in the truck, all-risk is money well spent. The right answer depends on route length and what you own, not on a rule.
Ask this exactly: "Is the insurance in my name with a policy document I receive before loading, or is it your company's internal guarantee?" These are completely different things. An internal guarantee is a promise from a company you are already in a dispute with. A policy is a claim against an insurer. Get the policy number in writing before the truck is loaded.
GST on Packers and Movers — What You Should Actually Be Charged
GST confusion is the single most exploited gap in this industry, in both directions. Some companies overcharge tax they never deposit. Others offer to skip GST entirely, which quietly destroys your ability to claim a transfer reimbursement.
| Service you are buying | GST rate | Input tax credit | Applies when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full relocation — packing, loading, transport, unloading, unpacking | 18% | Available to registered businesses | Almost all household and office moves |
| Transport only, as a Goods Transport Agency | 5% | Not available to the transporter | You pack and load; the company only moves the goods |

Worked GST examples
| Move | Base charge | GST | Total payable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 BHK local, Anna Nagar to KK Nagar, full packing | ₹6,500 | ₹1,170 @ 18% | ₹7,670 |
| 2 BHK local, Tallakulam to Othakadai, full packing | ₹11,000 | ₹1,980 @ 18% | ₹12,980 |
| 2 BHK, Madurai to Chennai, dedicated | ₹26,000 | ₹4,680 @ 18% | ₹30,680 |
| 3 BHK, Madurai to Bangalore, dedicated + all-risk insurance ₹8,000 | ₹38,000 + ₹8,000 | ₹8,280 @ 18% | ₹54,280 |
| Transport only, Madurai to Trichy, you pack and load | ₹9,000 | ₹450 @ 5% | ₹9,450 |
- The mover's GSTIN, printed and verifiable on the government GST portal
- The applicable SAC code for the service supplied
- Taxable value and the GST amount shown as separate lines, not merged into one figure
- CGST + SGST for a move within Tamil Nadu; IGST for an interstate move. The total percentage is the same either way
- Your name and address exactly as they appear on your official records, if you intend to claim reimbursement
If any of these are missing, it is not a GST invoice, whatever it says at the top. Verify the GSTIN yourself before paying — it takes thirty seconds on the GST portal.
An offer to "avoid GST" saves you 18% and costs you the entire reimbursement. Departments reject claims supported by informal receipts. If you are moving on a transfer order, the compliant invoice is not an optional extra — it is the reason you are hiring a registered company instead of a tempo from a stand.
Hidden Charges Every Customer Should Know About
These are the additions that turn a ₹12,000 quote into an ₹18,000 bill. None of them are illegitimate costs in themselves — they represent real work. The problem is when they are deliberately left out of the quote so the number looks competitive, then presented once your goods are on the truck and you have no leverage.
| Charge | Typical amount | Legitimate? | How to close the gap upfront |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor / staircase charge | ₹350 – ₹600 per floor | Yes | State your floor and lift availability at both ends when asking for the quote |
| Long carry from truck to door | ₹500 – ₹1,500 | Yes | Mention gated layouts and internal roads during the survey |
| Packing material "extra" | ₹2,000 – ₹6,000 | Only if genuinely excluded | Ask: is material included or extra? Get the answer in writing |
| Toll and octroi | ₹500 – ₹3,000 | Yes | Ask whether the quote is inclusive of tolls |
| Waiting / detention | ₹500 – ₹2,000 per day | Yes | Confirm free waiting hours at delivery in the quote |
| Second delivery trip | ₹1,500 – ₹4,000 | Yes | Ask if the vehicle size covers everything in one trip |
| Dismantling and reassembly | ₹800 – ₹2,500 per unit | Yes | List modular furniture explicitly during the survey |
| AC uninstall and reinstall | ₹700 – ₹2,200 per unit | Yes | Count your ACs and say so |
| Fuel surcharge added later | ₹1,000 – ₹3,000 | No | Insist on a fixed quote, not one "subject to fuel" |
| "Heavy item" charge discovered on the day | ₹1,000 – ₹5,000 | Usually not | A proper survey identifies heavy items in advance |
| Unloading fee demanded before delivery | Varies | No | Never agree to pay in full before goods are unloaded and checked |
Ask the company to write, in the quotation itself: "This is an all-inclusive quotation. No additional charges will apply unless the customer adds items or services not listed in the inventory." A company that will put that in writing will honour it. A company that hesitates has just told you something important.
What Increases Your Moving Cost
- Floors without a lift. The single biggest avoidable addition. A third-floor pickup with no lift adds roughly ₹1,000 to ₹1,800 to a 2 BHK.
- Fragile-heavy homes. Large glass dining tables, marble tops, mirrors, aquariums and framed artwork all need crating or heavy wrapping.
- Modular and imported furniture. Requires a carpenter at both ends. Chipboard modular units in particular cannot be moved assembled without risking permanent damage.
- Peak-season dates. Late May through early July, plus month-ends, are the busiest windows in Madurai.
- Short notice. Booking with less than 48 hours' notice removes every scheduling efficiency and adds 10 to 20%.
- Narrow access. Old city lanes, unpaved approach roads, or a society that will not permit a large truck inside.
- Split delivery to two addresses. Effectively two jobs.
- Plants, pets, aquariums. Specialist handling, and many companies decline them entirely.
- Under-declared inventory. Adding a fridge and a washing machine on moving day changes the vehicle size and the crew.
- Delivery-end restrictions. Chennai and Bangalore societies with fixed move-in windows can force overnight halts.
What Reduces Your Moving Cost
- Declutter genuinely before the survey. Moving is priced on volume. Selling or donating an old sofa, a broken cot and three boxes of unused kitchenware can take ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 off a 2 BHK. Do this before the survey so the reduction is in the quote.
- Move mid-month, mid-week. Tuesday to Thursday between the 8th and the 22nd is the cheapest window in Madurai.
- Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Advance booking gets you route planning and a better rate.
- Choose shared load if your timeline genuinely allows it. 25 to 40% saving on intercity moves.
- Pack your own clothes, books and linen. Non-fragile self-packing is safe and cuts material and labour. Leave crockery, glass and electronics to the crew.
- Combine your vehicle with your household goods. 8 to 15% off the vehicle leg.
- Move ground floor to ground floor where you have any choice in the matter.
- Be flexible by two or three days. Flexibility lets a company match your load to a returning empty vehicle, which is the largest single discount available on intercity routes.
- Get three written quotes with matching inventories. Not three phone estimates — three written quotes covering the same list of goods.
When You Move Changes What You Pay
Month by month in Madurai
| Period | Demand | Price effect | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| January – February | Moderate | Baseline | Steady residential and commercial movement |
| March | Rising | +5% | Financial year end, office and commercial moves |
| April – May | High | +15 to 25% | School year end, transfer season, Chithirai festival traffic in the old city |
| June | Peak | +20 to 30% | Government and bank transfer joining dates, college admissions, IT onboarding |
| Mid-July – mid-August (Aadi) | Low | −10 to 20% | Many Tamil families avoid house moves and housewarming during Aadi |
| September – October | Moderate | Baseline | Normal demand resumes |
| November | Moderate to high | +5 to 10% | Post-Deepavali moves, wedding season begins |
| Mid-December – mid-January (Margazhi) | Low to moderate | −5 to 15% | Traditionally avoided for new-home entry; good rates for those who move anyway |
If your family does not observe the Aadi restriction, mid-July to mid-August is the cheapest period of the year to shift in Madurai, and the easiest to get a good crew and a good vehicle on your preferred date. Demand drops noticeably while capacity does not. The same applies, to a smaller degree, during Margazhi.
Weekday, weekend and month-end
| When | Price effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday – Thursday | Baseline, best availability | The cheapest days to move |
| Monday | +3 to 5% | Backlog from the weekend |
| Friday | +5% | Start of weekend demand |
| Saturday | +8 to 15% | Highest residential demand |
| Sunday | +10 to 18% | Peak demand; some societies restrict Sunday moves |
| Month-end (28th – 3rd) | +10 to 20% | Rent cycles concentrate demand into six days |
| Mid-month (8th – 22nd) | −5 to 10% | Best combination of price and crew availability |
Charges by Home Type
| Property type | Local Madurai | To Chennai / Bangalore | What changes the price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 BHK apartment | ₹4,000 – ₹8,000 | ₹14,000 – ₹23,000 | Lift availability, appliance count |
| 2 BHK apartment | ₹7,000 – ₹13,500 | ₹20,000 – ₹33,000 | Furniture volume, wardrobe type |
| 3 BHK apartment | ₹11,000 – ₹19,000 | ₹29,000 – ₹46,000 | Modular units, number of ACs |
| 4 BHK apartment | ₹18,000 – ₹28,000 | ₹45,000 – ₹65,000 | Vehicle size, crew size, possible two trips |
| Independent house, single storey | ₹8,000 – ₹18,000 | ₹22,000 – ₹42,000 | Usually easier access, more accumulated goods |
| Independent house, two storey | ₹13,000 – ₹26,000 | ₹32,000 – ₹58,000 | Staircase handling throughout, no lift |
| Villa / duplex | ₹22,000 – ₹32,000 | ₹50,000 – ₹72,000 | Garden furniture, gym equipment, larger volumes |
| PG / hostel room | ₹1,800 – ₹3,500 | ₹6,000 – ₹11,000 | Shared load usually the sensible choice |
Apartments versus independent houses. The common assumption is that apartments are cheaper because of lifts. Often they are not. Apartment moves in Madurai frequently involve restricted timings, lift booking, security deposits with the association, and lifts too narrow for a mattress or a five-door wardrobe. Independent houses in areas like Iyer Bungalow, Othakadai or Thirunagar usually allow the truck right up to the door and the crew to work without a clock — but they also tend to hold fifteen years of accumulated goods, which is where the cost returns.
Charges by Customer Type
Government, bank and PSU employee transfers
Madurai is a divisional headquarters with the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, the district Collectorate, a Southern Railway divisional presence, and regional offices of most public sector banks. Transfer moves are a large share of what we handle, and for these customers the documentation matters as much as the shifting.
| Requirement | Why it matters for your claim |
|---|---|
| GST invoice with verifiable GSTIN and SAC code | Departments reject informal receipts outright |
| Consignment note / lorry receipt with declared value | Standard supporting document for TA/DA processing |
| Itemised packing list | Establishes what was moved, and supports any damage claim |
| Money receipt in the employee's name as per service records | Name mismatches are a common reason for rejection |
| Transit insurance policy copy | Required by several departments above a value threshold |
Reimbursement rules differ by department. Confirm your own department's format before booking, not after.
Army and defence transfers follow their own documentation format and often involve tighter deadlines and posting to remote stations. Rates are broadly the standard route rates; the difference is in paperwork, and in scheduling around a reporting date that will not move.
IT employees moving to Chennai, Bangalore or Hyderabad often have a relocation allowance with a cap. If yours does, ask for the quote to be structured so the reimbursable components are itemised separately — it makes the claim cleaner and you are less likely to lose part of the allowance to a merged line item. Madurai's own IT presence, including TIDEL Park and the companies around it, generates steady two-way movement on the Chennai and Bangalore corridors.
Corporate relocations booked by an employer are billed to the company with a GST invoice against which input tax credit can be claimed. For a registered business this reduces the effective cost by the full tax component, which is worth structuring properly.
Students moving to or from Madurai Kamaraj University, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, the medical colleges or the surrounding hostels are usually best served by shared load. A hostel room's worth of goods to Chennai or Bangalore on shared load runs ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 against ₹8,000 to ₹14,000 dedicated. The trade is time, and students usually have time.
Senior citizens moving alone or downsizing need a different kind of service rather than a different rate: a longer packing window over two days instead of one rushed morning, careful handling of medicines and documents in a separate clearly-marked box that travels with the family and not the truck, and a crew that will place furniture in position rather than leaving it in the middle of the room. This is worth asking for explicitly. It costs little and changes the experience entirely.
Truck Sizes and Which One You Actually Need
Paying for a truck bigger than you need wastes money. Booking one too small costs far more, because a second trip is charged as a second job.
| Vehicle | Load space | Approx. capacity | Suitable for | Local rate (Madurai) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Ace / mini truck | 7 ft | Up to 750 kg | Few items, studio, bachelor load, single-room shift | ₹1,500 – ₹2,800 |
| Tata 407 | 9 ft | Up to 2.5 tonnes | 1 BHK, small 2 BHK | ₹2,500 – ₹4,200 |
| 14 ft closed container | 14 ft | Up to 3.5 tonnes | Standard 2 BHK | ₹4,000 – ₹6,500 |
| 17 ft closed container | 17 ft | Up to 5 tonnes | Large 2 BHK, standard 3 BHK | ₹5,500 – ₹8,500 |
| 19 – 20 ft container | 19 – 20 ft | Up to 7 tonnes | 3 – 4 BHK | ₹7,500 – ₹11,000 |
| 22 – 24 ft container | 22 – 24 ft | 9 tonnes and above | Villa, large office | ₹10,000 – ₹16,000 |
Vehicle-only rates for local movement, ex-GST, excluding packing, labour and material.
An open-body truck with a tarpaulin is cheaper and is genuinely fine for a short local shift on a dry day. For any intercity move, insist on a closed container. Tamil Nadu highways in the monsoon, and highway dust in summer, will find their way past a tarpaulin. A closed container also cannot be casually opened at a halt, which matters more than most people think on an overnight run.
Three Real-World Cost Breakdowns
These are illustrative jobs built from our standard rate structure, showing how the components add up. Your own quote will differ — that is the point of a survey.
Scenario 1 — 2 BHK, Anna Nagar to KK Nagar, local, second floor with lift
| Vehicle — 14 ft closed container, single trip | ₹4,200 |
| Crew — 1 supervisor + 3 packers/loaders, one day | ₹3,300 |
| Packing material — 28 cartons, bubble wrap, stretch film, corrugated | ₹3,100 |
| Dismantle and reassemble 1 modular wardrobe + 1 bed | ₹1,600 |
| Uninstall and reinstall 1 split AC | ₹1,800 |
| Subtotal | ₹14,000 |
| GST @ 18% | ₹2,520 |
| Total payable | ₹16,520 |
Without the AC work and the modular furniture, the same move is ₹9,600 plus GST. Those two line items are the difference between the two quotes your neighbour got.
Scenario 2 — 1 BHK, Thirunagar to Bangalore, IT employee, dedicated vehicle
| Dedicated 407, Madurai to Bangalore, ~430 km, tolls included | ₹13,500 |
| Crew at origin — 3 staff, packing and loading | ₹2,400 |
| Crew at destination — 2 staff, unloading and placement | ₹1,500 |
| Packing material — 18 cartons and wrapping | ₹2,200 |
| Bike transport, 150cc, same consignment | ₹3,900 |
| Transit insurance, ₹3,00,000 declared, basic cover @ 1.2% | ₹3,600 |
| Subtotal | ₹27,100 |
| GST @ 18% | ₹4,878 |
| Total payable | ₹31,978 |
On shared load with an 8-day window and no bike, the same household goods move for roughly ₹13,500 plus GST. The premium above buys a committed date and a bike on the same truck.
Scenario 3 — 3 BHK, Tallakulam to Chennai, government transfer with full documentation
| Dedicated 17 ft closed container, Madurai to Chennai, ~460 km | ₹22,000 |
| Crew at origin — 5 staff over one and a half days | ₹6,200 |
| Crew at destination — 3 staff, unloading, unpacking, placement | ₹3,000 |
| Packing material — 52 cartons, wardrobe boxes, full wrapping | ₹5,800 |
| Dismantle and reassemble — 2 wardrobes, 2 beds, dining table | ₹4,500 |
| 3 split ACs, uninstall and reinstall | ₹5,400 |
| Transit insurance, ₹8,00,000 declared, all-risk @ 2.2% | ₹17,600 |
| Subtotal | ₹64,500 |
| GST @ 18% | ₹11,610 |
| Total payable | ₹76,110 |
Documentation supplied: GST invoice with SAC code, consignment note with declared value, itemised packing list, money receipt in the employee's name, and the insurance policy copy — the standard set for a TA/DA claim.
Why Two Companies Quote Different Prices for the Same Move
| Broker / lead portal | Tempo stand operator | Registered local company | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who actually does your move | An unknown vendor who bought your enquiry | The driver and hired daily-wage help | The company's own trained crew |
| Initial quote | Lowest — designed to win the call | Low | Realistic |
| Final bill versus quote | Frequently 30 – 60% higher | Often higher on the day | Matches, if the survey was proper |
| Packing standard | Varies by whoever turns up | Minimal to none | Defined and consistent |
| GST invoice | Sometimes, from a third party | Rarely | Always |
| Insurance | Unclear | None | Documented policy |
| Who you call if something breaks | Nobody with authority | The driver | The company office |
| Number of calls after you enquire | 5 – 15, from different vendors | 1 | 1 |
Price differences between genuine companies come from real variables: own fleet versus hired vehicles, trained staff versus daily labour, material grade, insurance backing, and whether GST is actually deposited. A quote 40% below every other quote has not found an efficiency nobody else has. It has left something out, and you will find out what during the move.
How to Avoid Moving Scams in Madurai
- Full payment demanded before delivery. The most serious one. A reasonable structure is a modest advance to confirm the booking and the balance on delivery, before unloading is complete.
- Quote given over the phone in under a minute, with no survey and no inventory. Nobody can price a home they have not seen or listed.
- No physical office address, or an address that does not exist when you check it.
- Refusal to provide a GST invoice, or a GSTIN that fails verification on the GST portal.
- A price dramatically below every other quote you have received.
- Pressure to confirm immediately because "the offer is only for today."
- Ten different companies calling within an hour of you filling one form. Your enquiry has been sold.
- No written quotation, only a WhatsApp message with a number.
- The vehicle that arrives is unmarked and the crew have no company identification.
- The name closely resembles a well-known company but the contact details and location are different.
Your verification checklist
- ☐ Verify the GSTIN on the government GST portal yourself
- ☐ Confirm the office address exists — check it on a map, and visit if the move is large
- ☐ Read reviews on more than one platform, and treat a run of identical five-star reviews posted in the same week as a warning rather than a recommendation
- ☐ Get the quotation in writing, on letterhead, with an inventory attached
- ☐ Confirm in writing who is liable for damage, and how a claim is filed
- ☐ Ask whether the crew are employees or subcontracted for the day
- ☐ Confirm the payment schedule in writing before any advance is paid
- ☐ Ask for the driver's name and mobile number before loading day
- ☐ Photograph your goods and any existing damage before packing begins
- ☐ Keep documents, jewellery, medicines and laptops with you, never in the truck
Twelve Questions to Ask Before You Book
- Is this quotation all-inclusive, and will you write that on the quotation?
- Is packing material included, or billed separately?
- Which vehicle size are you sending, and is one trip enough for this inventory?
- Are the crew your own employees, or hired for the day?
- What is the GST rate you will charge, and what is your GSTIN?
- What insurance is included, and will I receive a policy document before loading?
- What is the committed delivery date — and is that a date or a window?
- What are the floor, long-carry and waiting charges, if any apply here?
- Who is my single point of contact during the move, and will they be reachable on the day?
- What is the payment schedule, and what is due before unloading?
- How do I file a damage claim, and what is the resolution timeline?
- Will you provide a consignment note and an itemised packing list?
- Declutter before the survey, not after — the reduction has to be reflected in the quote to save you anything.
- Pick Tuesday to Thursday, mid-month, outside May and June.
- Ask directly whether a shared load or a return-empty vehicle is available on your route in your date window.
- Self-pack clothes, books, linen and shoes. Leave crockery, glass, TVs and electronics to the crew — the material saving is not worth a broken television.
- Book your bike or car with the same consignment.
- Empty and defrost the fridge 24 hours ahead; a wet fridge means a delay and a delay means labour hours.
- Get three written quotes against the same inventory, then negotiate on the middle one rather than the lowest.
- If your employer reimburses, confirm which components are claimable before booking, and have those itemised separately.
How to Get an Accurate Quotation — Step by Step
- Make a room-by-room list. Beds, wardrobes, sofas, dining set, fridge, washing machine, TVs, ACs, and an honest estimate of cartons. Ten minutes here prevents most disputes.
- Note the access at both ends. Floor number, lift and whether furniture fits in it, how close a truck can park, any society timing restrictions.
- Request a survey. Free, and in Madurai city usually within a few hours. A video survey over WhatsApp works well for smaller homes and for customers who are already at their new city.
- Ask for the quotation in writing, itemised — vehicle, labour, material, specials, insurance, GST shown separately.
- Compare like with like. Three quotes against the same inventory and the same service level. A cheaper quote that excludes material is not a cheaper quote.
- Confirm the date, the vehicle and the crew size in writing.
- Pay a booking advance only, against a receipt.
- On moving day, check the packing list against your goods before the truck leaves, and again at delivery before you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pricing basics
What is the average cost of packers and movers in Madurai?
For a local move within Madurai, most households pay between ₹4,000 and ₹19,000 depending on size, with a typical 2 BHK landing around ₹7,000 to ₹13,500 before GST. Intercity moves start around ₹8,000 for short South Tamil Nadu routes and run to ₹65,000 or more for a 3 BHK to Hyderabad.
Why do quotes for the same move differ so much?
Because they are often not quoting the same job. One may exclude packing material, another may assume a smaller vehicle, a third may not include floor charges. Ask all three to quote against one written inventory and one service level, and the gap usually narrows to 10 or 15%.
Is there a fixed rate per kilometre?
No, and any per-km rate quoted in isolation is misleading. Distance drives fuel and tolls, but crew, material and handling do not scale with distance at all. Two moves of the same distance can differ by 100% based on volume and access.
How much advance should I pay?
A booking advance of 10 to 25% is normal. Full payment before delivery is not, and you should treat that demand as a reason to walk away.
Can I negotiate the price?
Yes, within reason. The most effective levers are flexibility on the date, reducing the volume, and choosing shared load. Pushing a genuine company far below cost usually results in a smaller crew or thinner packing rather than a genuine saving.
Are prices higher for a last-minute move?
Typically 10 to 20% higher inside 48 hours, because the company cannot plan the route or the crew efficiently and may need to pull staff off other work.
What is the cheapest way to shift within Madurai?
Transport-only with self-packing, on a weekday, mid-month, ground floor to ground floor, with a decluttered load. That combination can bring a 1 BHK to around ₹2,800.
Do charges include unpacking and rearranging?
Basic unloading and placement in the correct room is normally included. Full unpacking — opening every carton and putting contents away — is usually an add-on of ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 depending on home size. Confirm which one your quote covers.
Is a free survey really free?
Yes. A pre-move survey should never be charged, and a company that charges for one is unusual enough to be worth questioning.
What if my final load is bigger than what was surveyed?
The price will legitimately increase, because the vehicle and crew were sized to the survey. This is exactly why an honest, complete inventory at survey stage protects you rather than the mover.
Local shifting in Madurai
How long does a local 2 BHK move take?
Six to nine hours end to end with a proper crew — roughly three to four hours packing and loading, under an hour in transit within the city, and two to three hours unloading and placement.
Do you charge extra for a third-floor flat without a lift?
Yes, typically ₹350 to ₹600 per floor. It should be stated in the quotation, not added on the day.
Can a large truck reach my house in the old city?
Often not. The lanes around the Meenakshi Amman temple, the Masi streets and similar areas need a small shuttle vehicle running to a larger truck on a main road. Tell us in advance and it is priced in advance.
Which areas of Madurai do you cover?
All of them — Anna Nagar, KK Nagar, Tallakulam, SS Colony, Goripalayam, Mattuthavani, Othakadai, Thirunagar, Iyer Bungalow, Avaniyapuram, Villapuram, Ponmeni, Palanganatham, Narimedu, Kochadai, Samayanallur, Thiruparankundram and the surrounding areas.
Can you move a single item, like a fridge or a bed?
Yes. Single-item local moves within Madurai typically run ₹800 to ₹2,500 depending on the item, the floor and the distance.
Do you work on Sundays and public holidays?
Yes, with a premium of roughly 10 to 18%. Note that many apartment associations restrict Sunday moves, so check your building's rules first.
Intercity moves and routes
How long does Madurai to Chennai take?
One to two days on a dedicated vehicle. Four to eight days on shared load.
What is the cheapest intercity option?
Shared load, booked two to three weeks in advance, moving mid-week and mid-month. Expect 25 to 40% below a dedicated vehicle.
Can I travel with my goods?
No. Insurance and motor vehicle regulations do not permit passengers in goods vehicles. You can track the vehicle and stay in contact with the driver throughout.
Do you deliver to the doorstep in Chennai and Bangalore?
Yes, subject to the destination building permitting truck access. Where it does not, a shuttle is arranged and quoted in advance.
Is an e-way bill needed for my move?
For interstate consignments above the prescribed value threshold, yes, and a registered company generates it. If a mover cannot explain their e-way bill process on an interstate route, that is a meaningful warning sign.
What if delivery is delayed?
Ask before booking what the company's policy is on delay, and get the committed date in writing. Weather, breakdowns and check-post delays do occur; what distinguishes a good company is that you are told immediately rather than discovering it yourself.
Can you hold my goods if my new house is not ready?
Yes, through warehousing. Budget for monthly storage plus one-time handling charges in and out.
Do you cover routes beyond South India?
Yes — Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and other major cities, on both dedicated and shared load.
Vehicle transport
How much to transport a bike from Madurai to Chennai?
₹3,500 to ₹4,800 for a scooter or bike up to 125cc, rising to ₹5,200 to ₹7,200 for bikes above 350cc.
Do I need to empty the fuel tank?
Yes. The tank must be drained to near-empty before loading. It is a safety requirement in closed carriers, not a formality.
Open or enclosed carrier for a car?
Open multi-car carriers are the standard and are fine for most vehicles. Enclosed single-vehicle carriers cost 60 to 90% more and make sense for premium, luxury or newly delivered cars.
Is my vehicle insured during transport?
Only if you take transit insurance for it. Your own motor policy generally does not cover damage while the vehicle is being carried on another vehicle. Confirm this in writing.
Can my car carry household goods inside it during transport?
No. Carriers do not permit loaded vehicles, and anything inside is uninsured. Remove everything, including items in the boot.
GST, billing and documentation
What GST rate applies to my move?
18% for full-service relocation including packing, loading, transport and unloading. 5% applies only where the company provides transport alone and you handle packing and loading yourself.
Can I avoid paying GST?
Not legally with a registered company, and you should not want to. Without a valid GST invoice you cannot claim a transfer reimbursement, a business cannot claim input tax credit, and you have no documented contract if something goes wrong.
Can my company claim input tax credit on a relocation bill?
A GST-registered business can generally claim ITC on office relocation billed to the company at 18%. Personal household moves are not eligible. Confirm with your own accountant.
What documents do I get for a government transfer claim?
GST invoice with GSTIN and SAC code, consignment note with declared value, itemised packing list, money receipt in your name as per service records, and the transit insurance policy copy.
How do I verify a company's GSTIN?
Enter it in the search facility on the government GST portal. It shows the registered legal name, address and status in seconds. Do this before paying any advance.
Is the quotation inclusive of GST?
Usually not — most quotes in this industry are ex-GST. Ask explicitly, because 18% on a ₹30,000 move is ₹5,400 and it is not a pleasant discovery on invoice day.
Insurance, damage and safety
Is insurance compulsory?
Not legally, but strongly advisable on any intercity move. For a local move of modest value, basic cover is usually sufficient.
What if something is damaged?
Report it immediately at delivery, before signing the delivery receipt. Photograph the damage and the packing it came in. Claims filed after the receipt is signed clean are much harder to pursue.
Does insurance cover items I packed myself?
Usually not for breakage. Insurers generally exclude owner-packed cartons because the packing standard cannot be verified. This is worth knowing before you decide to self-pack fragiles.
How should I declare the value of my goods?
Honestly, at realistic replacement value. Under-declaring to reduce the premium reduces your payout by the same proportion, which defeats the purpose entirely.
What should I never put in the truck?
Jewellery, cash, original documents, passports, medicines you need daily, laptops and hard drives. Carry them yourself. No reputable company will accept liability for these, and no insurer will cover them.
Booking and process
How far in advance should I book?
Two to three weeks for a normal move. Four weeks or more for May and June, which are the busiest months in Madurai.
Can I get a quote without a home visit?
Yes, via a video survey on WhatsApp. It works well for 1 and 2 BHK homes. For 3 BHK and larger, a physical survey gives a materially more accurate number.
What should I do the day before the move?
Defrost and dry the fridge, back up your devices, set aside a separate box of essentials that travels with you, keep your documents and valuables with you, and confirm the arrival time and the driver's number with the company.
Do you dismantle and reassemble furniture?
Yes. Modular wardrobes and beds are charged at ₹800 to ₹2,500 per unit and are best identified during the survey so they appear in the quote.
What if I need to change my moving date?
Tell us as early as you can. Rescheduling with reasonable notice is normally free. A change inside 24 hours may attract a charge because the crew and vehicle were committed.
Do you handle plants, pets or aquariums?
Plants can usually be carried on shorter routes with limitations. Pets we do not transport, and we would encourage you to use a specialist pet relocation service rather than a goods vehicle. Aquariums need to be drained and the livestock moved separately.
What happens if it rains on moving day?
Closed containers protect goods in transit, and the crew use waterproof covers for the walk between door and truck. Heavy rain can slow loading; it rarely stops a move.
How do I make a complaint if something goes wrong?
Contact the company office directly first, in writing, with photographs and the delivery receipt. If it is not resolved, relocation services fall within consumer protection law and a complaint can be filed with the consumer redressal forum. Keeping your quotation, invoice, packing list and delivery receipt is what makes that route viable.
